When in the Course of my youthful existence, it becomes necessary for me to dissolve the physical limitations which have connected the mind, soul, and spirit with that of a Beast, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of Smith requires that I should declare the causes which impel me to the instantiation of this separation.

I hold these truths to be self-evident, that all humans are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Health and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Mankind keeps in utmost importance, a healthful body, deriving its strength from the consent of the Nature and the Environment. That whenever Nature becomes less benevolent and even destructive of these ends, it is the Right of Mankind to prevent further occurrences of these offenses, and to institute Hospitals, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to improve Mankind’s Health and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that health procedures long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer repeatedly, while the Beast’s evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same soul evinces a design to reduce her under absolute Despotism, it is her right, it is her duty, to throw off such Beast, and to provide renewed health for her future Well-Being. Such has been my patient sufferance; and such is now the necessity which constrains me to break the shackles that have chained me to such a Horrid Being. The history of the present form of Systemic Lupus Erythematosis is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over my body. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has made the necessity of incessant blood tests, all without convinced diagnosis.

He has hurled me into successive, persistent fevers increasing in intensity and heat.

He has, deeming it witty and amusing, plagued my face with rashes in the shape of butterflies.

He has refused my right to live a conventional, active teenage life, instead suppressing me under his grasp of relentless dominion.

He has dissolved my hair follicles repeatedly, making hair a regular condiment in my dinner.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to withhold the growth of new hair follicles.

He has forbidden the freedom to enjoy the outdoors, and instead has confined me to a bed, where I evaporate in fatigue.

He has denied my memory in remembering to save this document, so that I lose all grievances against him.

He has made my daily activities dependent on his Will alone, for their duration, and whether or not I may complete them at all.

He has made me, in the eyes of my parents and peers, less capable and robust.

He has branded me as one who “Dances with Lupus”.

He has ignored the Third Amendment and kept himself, in times of peace, comfortably quartered within me, without my consent.

He has smuggled my energy, strength, and memory, and smothered them in consistent flares of his eternal pyre.

He has plundered my spirit, ravaged my vigor, burnt my vitality, and destroyed my life as a once healthy teenager.

He has endeavored, in every way that he could, to destroy my confidence in my own powers, to lessen my self-respect, and to make me willing to lead a dependent and abject life.

In every stage of these Oppressions I have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: My repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated flares of injury! This Beast, this fraud who thinks himself a Gargantuan Monarch is unfit to be the ruler of my youthful life.

I, a victim of Systemic Lupus Erythematosis do feel aggrieved, oppressed, and fraudulently deprived of my most sacred rights, insist that I have immediate admission to all the rights and privileges which belong to me as a Human. I must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces my Separation from this Beast.

I, therefore, the Representative the 100 Trillion Cells that comprise my Body, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Smith of the World for the rectitude of my intentions, do, solemnly publish and declare, that I am, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent of Systemic Lupus Erythematosis; that I am Absolved from all unnecessary Allegiance to the Hospitals, and that all physical, mental, and emotional connection between me and the Beast, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a Human Free and Independent of Lupus, I have full Power to Remember, retain Hair, combat Fatigue, practice Audacity, and to do all other Acts and Things which Normal, Youthful Teenage Girls do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, I pledge to myself my Life, my Welfare and my sacred Health.
